Judge John F. Cherry - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. John F. Cherry is a judge for the Dauphin County Court of Common Pleas in Pennsylvania. He was elected to the bench in November 1999 and was retained to the seat in November 2009 and 2019.

During his judicial tenure, Cherry was named to a five-year term as president judge of the Dauphin County Court of Common Pleas in January 2020. In addition, he has presided over civil and dependency matters.

Cherry received a bachelor’s degree in European history from Gannon University in 1973. He then spent the next six years working as a teacher, coach, and assistant principal at Elk County Christian High School (1973 to 1979) before completing a J.D. at Pennsylvania State University, Dickinson Law in 1983.

Prior to joining the bench, Cherry worked for six years as the Dauphin County District Attorney, a position to which he was appointed in 1993. He was subsequently elected to the post in 1994 and remained in that capacity until joining the Court of Common Pleas in 1999.

At the time of his appointment to District Attorney, he was a partner at Goldberg, Katzman & Shipman, where he had practiced since 1990.

Cherry first joined the Dauphin County District Attorney’s Office as a deputy district attorney in 1986. He remained there until 1988 when he briefly joined the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General as an assistant attorney general. By the following year, Cherry returned to the District Attorney’s Office, this time as a chief deputy district attorney, though his time there would also be brief (1989 to 1990). He left to join Goldberg, Katzman & Shipman.

His memberships included the Pennsylvania Bar Association and the Dauphin County Bar Association.

Cherry, who was born in DuBois, is the son of the Hon. John A. Cherry (deceased), who sat as a judge in Clearfield County. He is also the brother of the Hon. Paul E. Cherry, a judge of the Clearfield County Court of Common Pleas. Cherry graduated from DuBois High School.

He and his wife, fellow attorney Camille Kostelac Cherry, have two sons.
