Biography

The Hon. John D. Conley is a judge for the Superior Court of Orange County in California. He was elected on March 8, 2000.

Conley earned a B.A. from Yale University in 1964. He then received a J.D. from the University of Michigan in 1968. Conley also earned an M.S. in criminology from California State University, Long Beach in 1971 as well as an M.P.A from the University of Southern California in 1981.

Conley served in the Office of the District Attorney of Orange County from 1972 to 2001. He began as a deputy district attorney, eventually becoming a senior assistant district attorney in 1990. During his time in the Office of the District Attorney, he supervised the Writs and Appeals Section, the Homicide Unit, and the Juvenile Unit. He also created the Sexual Assault Unit and the Gang Unit.

After graduating from Yale University, Conley served in Vietnam as a Private in the United States Marine Corps. He also served as a Lieutenant in the Military Police Corps of the United States Army from 1969 to 1970.

He sat on the Board of Directors of the California District Attorney’s Association from 1979 to 1981. He was also named the Outstanding California Prosecutor of 1988 by the California District Attorney’s Association for his successful prosecution of Virl Earles.
