The Hon. John C. Cope is a judge for the Superior Court of Contra Costa County in California. Cope was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jerry Brown on December 27, 2013, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Joyce M. Cram.
Judge Cope earned both his B.A. and J.D. from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
Prior to his appointment to the bench, Cope served as a deputy district attorney for the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office from 1991 to 2013.
Cope was raised the youngest of six children in Hanford, a small farming community in central California. His mother was a teacher's aide, and his father was a teacher.
He was a resident of Benicia, California at the time of his appointment. He is married with six children, and he enjoys woodworking and swimming in his spare time.
Cope is a Republican.
