Judge John B. Sumner - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. John B. Sumner (Ret.) was a judge for the Cherokee County Juvenile Court in Georgia. He was appointed to the bench by the Cherokee County Superior Court judges in 2001. Sumner retired in September 2021.

Prior to beginning his judicial career, he had practiced in the areas of domestic law, appeals, child representation, and juvenile courts as a trial attorney since 1987.

Sumner received a bachelor’s degree in criminology from Georgia State University in 1983. He went on to complete a J.D. at Georgia State University College of Law in 1987.

Following his retirement, Sumner joined the Marietta office of Hobson & Hobson, P.C. as general counsel and Director of Arbitration Services in 2021.

His memberships have included the Georgia Council of Juvenile Court Judges (past president), the Nominating Committee Georgia Child Advocate, the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative State Steering Committee, the Georgia Supreme Court Justice for Children Committee, CASA of Cherokee County (Board of Directors), and the Juvenile Justice Incentive Grant Program State Funding Committee.

Sumner received the Light of Hope Award from CASA (2011), the Judicial Enforcement Partnership Award from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (2010), the Public Servant of the Year State of Georgia from the Child Placement Conference (2007), and the Law Enforcement Award from Canton Optimist (2003).
