Judge Joanne D. Quinones - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Joanne D. Quinones is an Acting Justice of the Kings County Supreme Court (Criminal Term) in the Second Judicial District of New York.

Quinones was initially appointed to the Civil Court of the City of New York by former Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2010. Shortly after her appointment, she was assigned to the Criminal Court of the City of New York in Bronx County. The following year, Mayor Bloomberg appointed her to the Criminal Court of the City of New York in New York County. He re-appointed her to the bench in 2013. Then, four years later, Quinones was designated to the Kings County Supreme Court.

Prior to her appointment to the bench, Quinones worked as a senior staff attorney for the Criminal Defense Division of the Legal Aid Society from 1997 to 2000. Then, in 2001, she joined the New York State Unified Court System. She entered as a court attorney, rising through the ranks to become an associate court attorney in 2004 and a principal court attorney in 2008.

Quinones earned a B.A. from Brown University in 1992. Then, in 1997, she completed a J.D. at Fordham University School of Law.

She has served as president of the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association, co-chair of the Diversity Committee of the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York, director of the Association of Judges of Hispanic Heritage, and president of the Latino Judges Association. Her other memberships have included the Association of Judges of the Criminal Court of the City of New York, the Judges and Lawyers Breast Cancer Alert, the National Association of Women Judges, the Brooklyn Bar Association, the Cervantes Society, the Catholic Lawyers Guild of Kings County, the Puerto Rican Bar Association, the New York County Lawyers Association, and the New York State Bar Association.
