Judge Jessica G. Costello - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Jessica G. Costello is a judge for the Hillsborough County Court in Florida. She was appointed to the bench by Governor Ron DeSantis on March 29, 2019, filling a vacancy created by the elevation of the Hon. Lawrence M. Lefler to the Hillsborough County Circuit Court.

Prior to her appointment, Costello was an assistant statewide prosecutor for the Florida Office of the Attorney General, a position to which she was named in 2014. During her tenure there, she managed local, state, and federal law enforcement teams in the prosecution of organized crime, specializing in counter-terrorism, gangs, human trafficking, drug trafficking, and fraud cases.

Costello earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Florida in 2006. She then completed a J.D. at Florida State University College of Law in 2009.

After graduating from law school, Costello began her legal career as an assistant state attorney in the Office of the State Attorney for the 4th Judicial Circuit. She served in that capacity until 2011, at which time she entered into private practice at Ogden & Sullivan. She spent the next two years representing sports, entertainment, and hospitality entities in premises liability and general negligence litigation before joining the Office of the State Attorney for the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit in 2013.

Her memberships have included the International Association of Human Trafficking Investigators, the Internet Crimes Against Children Central Florida Task Force, and the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force Executive Committee. She also sat on the Florida Children and Youth Cabinet as well as the Military Affairs Committee and the Standing Committee on Diversity & Inclusion for the Florida Bar.

Raised in Irmo, South Carolina, Costello attended Dutch Fork High School. Her husband, Shane, is a shareholder with a law firm in Tampa. They have one son.
