Judge Jeffrey P. Bassett - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Jeffrey P. Bassett is a judge for the Kitsap County Superior Court in Washington. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Jay Inslee on February 9, 2016, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Jay B. Roof.

Prior to his appointment, Bassett worked as a sole practitioner in his own private practice, specializing in family law matters (2010 to 2016). Before that, he was lead counsel for the Center for DUI Defense (2008 to 2009), Section Chief for the Office of the Florida State Attorney General (2001 to 2008), and managing attorney for Kenneth B. Shellan & Associates (1990 to 2000).

Bassett earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Florida in 1983. He then completed a J.D. at Florida State University College of Law in 1985.

His memberships have included Washington LEGALS (president). He also served as a volunteer attorney for VAPWA, handling pro bono matters for people living with HIV and AIDS.

He is a recipient of the Professionalism Award from the Miami-Dade County Courts (2007).

When not presiding over the bench, Bassett is a second-generation judge, his father having served as a municipal judge in Sweetwater, Florida. He is deeply involved in community theatres throughout Puget Sound. He is also a foster parent, helping children as they navigate through the foster care system since 2014.
