Biography

The Hon. Jeffrey M. Zimmerman is an interim judge for the Criminal Court of the City of New York in Bronx County. He was appointed to the bench by Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2018.

Zimmerman earned a B.A. in psychology from Dartmouth College in 1981. Then, in 1984, he completed a J.D. from Columbia Law School.

After graduating from law school, Zimmerman joined the Trial Division of the New York County Office of the District Attorney, where he served as an assistant district attorney from 1984 to 1987. He then entered into private practice, spending the next six years as an associate at Patterson, Belknap, Webb & Tyler. During his tenure there, he specialized in libel, trademark, copyright, false advertising, employment discrimination, antitrust, patent, election law, First Amendment law, corporate investigations and sports law matters. He was also assigned to serve as staff counsel for the Mollen Commission on Alleged Police Corruption from 1992 to 1993.

Zimmerman left the private sector in 1994. At that time, he moved to the Office of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. He started as an assistant U.S. Attorney in its Criminal Division, rising through the ranks to become Chief of the General Crimes Unit in 1998.

Then, in 1999, Zimmerman accepted a position with Time Warner Cable. He held various positions at the company, including deputy general counsel, chief litigation counsel, and chief ethics and compliance officer.

Just prior to his appointment to the bench, Zimmerman served as deputy director of Crime Strategy and Public Safety for the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice from 2017 to 2018.

Zimmerman has been a member of the New York State Supreme Court Commercial Division Advisory Council as well as an arbitrator for the New York City Small Claims Court.
