The Hon. Jeffrey L. Ashton is a judge for the Domestic Relations Division of the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court in Orange County, Florida. He was elected to the bench in 2018.
Ashton earned a B.A. in philosophy from the University of Florida in 1978. He then continued his studies at the University of Florida, Fredric G. Levin College of Law, where he completed a J.D. in 1980.
After graduating from law school, Ashton joined the Office of the State Attorney for the Ninth Judicial Circuit as an assistant state attorney. During his thirty-year tenure there, Ashton helped prosecute Tommie Andrews. This was the first case in the United States to use DNA evidence to convict a serial rapist. He also created a homicide specialization unit, tasked with prosecuting murder cases. While serving in that capacity, he stepped into the national spotlight, prosecuting the case against Casey Anthony.
Then, in 2012, Ashton was elected to serve as the State Attorney for the Office of the State Attorney for the Ninth Judicial Circuit. He retired from this position in 2016.
He has served as co-chair of the Orange County Bar Teen Education Committee; treasurer of the Florida Prosecuting Attorneys Association; board member of the Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation; board member of the Osceola County Investigative Bureau; chairman of the Medical Examiner Selection Committee for District Nine; and member of the Orange County Mayor Domestic Violence Task Force. He is also a former Scout Leader of Cub Pack 64.
Ashton was born in St. Petersburg, Florida. He graduated from Boca Ciega High School.
