Judge Jay B. Roof - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Jay B. Roof (Ret.) served as a judge for the Kitsap County Superior Court in Washington. Roof was appointed to the bench by former Governor Mike Lowry in 1994. He retired in 2016.

Roof was instrumental in founding and running the Kitsap County Drug Court, which offers addiction treatment and supervision services to defendants. He also sat as a judge pro tempore for the Poulsbo Municipal Court.

Prior to his appointment, Roof served as a deputy prosecuting attorney for the Kitsap County Prosecuting Attorney. Before that, he was a partner at Roof, Tolman & Kirk.

Roof earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston in 1965. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Washington School of Law in 1969.

His memberships have included the Kitsap County Bar Association (president), the Washington State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America.

He was born in Chicago, Illinois.
