Hon. Jay A. Meyer is a judge for the Seneca County Court of Common Pleas (Probate and Juvenile Division) in Ohio. He was elected to the bench in 2008.
During his judicial tenure, Meyer was instrumental in securing several grants in an effort to expand court services, which resulted in the creation of the Seneca County Youth Center, the Family Intervention Court, the Diversion Program, the Community Services/Restitution Program, the IV-D Contract, the Solid Waste District Contract, the Indigent Guardianship Program, the Behavioral Health Services Grant, and the Supreme Court Technology Grant.
Meyer received a B.A. from Ohio Northern University. He went on to complete a J.D. at Ohio Northern University, Claude W. Pettit College of Law. Meyer was admitted to practice in Ohio in 1996 and was admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Northern and Southern District of Ohio.
After graduating from law school, he began his legal career as an assistant prosecuting attorney with the Seneca County Prosecutor’s Office. Meyer also worked with the Seneca County Child Support Enforcement Agency (CSEA), prosecuting those who were delinquent in their child support payments and the Seneca County Department of Job and Family Services (SCDJFS), where he was tasked with prosecuting individuals who had taken advantage of the welfare system.
Then, in 1998, Meyer left the public sector to enter into private practice at the Shuff Law Office before becoming a partner in the law firm of Meyer & Kerschner the following year. During his ten-year tenure at the firm, he handled business/institutional representation, litigation, and probate matters.
His memberships have included the Ohio State Bar Association, the Probate and Juvenile Judges Association, the Ohio Association of Probate Judges, the American Judges Association, the Ohio Association of Juvenile Court Judges, the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, the Ohio Judicial Conference, the National College of Probate Judges, and the Seneca County Bar Association.
His civic involvement included the Seneca County Commission on Aging (Board of Directors), the Tiffin-Bucyrus YMCA (Board of Directors), the Northern Ohio Community Correctional Facility (Governing Board), the Tiffin Rotary Club (Auction Finance co-chair for the Tiffin Rotary Auction), and the Support Service Committee for Tiffin City Schools.
Meyer is a former Director of the Christian Counseling Center, Community Hospice Care, and the Tiffin-Seneca United Way.
In addition, he acted as a speaker at the 2013 National Machinery Citizenship Awards, a keynote speaker for the Tiffin City Schools Academic Letter Breakfast, a Career Day panelist and drug awareness group discussion panelist at NCOESC, a career day speaker for the Tiffin City and Calvert Schools, and a mentor for the Seneca Area Career System Mentorship Program.
Meyer has also served as a Mock Trial Judge for Tiffin City Schools and coached youth sports including serving as the freshman boys basketball coach for Tiffin Calvert.
A lifelong resident of Seneca County, Meyer graduated from Tiffin Columbian High School. His father, the Hon. Gerald D. Meyer, also presided as a Seneca County Probate and Juvenile Court judge (1978 to 1998).
He and his wife, Heidi, have four children.
