Biography

The Hon. Janet Gaard (Ret.) was a judge for the Yolo County Superior Court in California. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2008. She filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Doris Shockley (Ret.). Gaard retired from the bench in 2019.

She is registered as a Democrat.

Gaard received her B.S. from California State University, Fresno. She went on to earn her J.D. from the University of California, Davis School of Law in 1983.

After graduating from law school, Gaard served as a staff attorney for the Third District Court of Appeal for one year. Then, in 1984, she joined the California Department of Justice's Office of the Attorney General, where she would remain until her appointment to the Superior Court in 2008. During her twenty-four year tenure with the A.G.'s office, Gaard served as a deputy attorney general assigned to the Criminal Division from 1984 to 1999 and as a special assistant attorney general and director of legislative affairs from 1999 to 2007. From 2007, until her appointment to the bench, Gaard had served as chief assistant attorney general for the A.G.'s Division of Public Rights.

During her tenure on the bench, Gaard served as the Assistant Presiding Judge of the Court and the Presiding Judge of the Court. She also presided over the Collaborative Courts in Yolo County.

Her judicial committees included the Governing Committee of the Judicial Council's Center of Judicial Education, the Judicial College Steering Committee, the Criminal Law Curriculum Committee, the Judicial Council's Language Access Plan Implementation Task Force, and the Criminal Law Advisory Committee.

She was awarded the Yolo Outstanding Mental Health Community Service Award from the local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness in 2019.
