Judge Jan Soifer - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Jan Soifer is a judge for the 345th District Court in Travis County, Texas. She was elected to the bench in 2016 and re-elected in 2020.

Soifer earned a B.A. in history from Yale University in 1979. Then, in 1982, she completed a J.D. at the University of Texas at Austin School of Law. She is Board Certified in Consumer and Commercial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

After graduating from law school, Soifer began her legal career as an associate at Brown McCarroll. She worked in that capacity until 1986, at which time she joined the Texas Attorney General's Office. During her tenure there, she rose through the ranks, eventually becoming Deputy Chief of the Consumer Protection Division and Chief of the Charitable Trusts Section.

Soifer returned to private practice in 1997. She worked as a partner at Locke Lord Bissell & Liddell (1997 to 2004), special counsel to the False Claims Act Section at Baron & Budd (2008 to 2010), and partner at O'Connell & Soifer (2010 to 2016). Over the course of her legal career, Soifer specialized in the representation of whistleblowers, same-gender couples, and abortion providers.

She has served as president of the Austin Bar Association, president of the Austin Young Lawyers Association, president of Interfaith Action of Central Texas, president of Congregation Beth Israel of Austin, chair of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Austin, chairwoman of the Travis County Democratic Party, and director of the State Bar of Texas. She has also been named Associate National Commissioner of the Anti-Defamation League and a National Advisory Council Member of J Street.

Soifer is a recipient of the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Travis County Women Lawyers Association, Yeller Dawg Award from the South Austin Democrats, and the Belief in Action Award from the National Council of Jewish Women.

She is registered as a Democrat.
