Biography

The Hon. James P. Arguelles is a judge for the Sacramento County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 2010 by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Thomas M. Cecil.

He is a registered Republican.

Judge Arguelles received his B.S. from the United States Naval Academy. He went on to earn his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1996.

After graduating from law school, Arguelles served a one-year clerkship for the Hon. Marilyn L. Huff with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California beginning in 1996. He would then begin his legal career in private practice, where he worked as an associate at the law firm of Gibson, Dunn, and Crutcher for three years.

Then, in 2000, Arguelles left the private arena to join the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of California, where he served as an assistant U.S. Attorney from 2000 to 2005.

Arguelles also served as a judge advocate general in the United States Army Reserves beginning in 2002.

Prior to his appointment to the bench, Arguelles was working as an attorney at the law firm of Stevens, O'Connell, and Jacobs beginning in 2005.

During his time on the bench, Judge Arguelles presided over a general trial calendar as well as the civil writs department.
