The Honorable James M. Mize

Biography

The Hon. James M. Mize is a judge for the Sacramento County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 2000 by former governor Gray Davis.

Judge Mize graduated with his B.A. in psychology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1968. He would then pursue his M.S.W. at UC Berkeley's School of Social Welfare, graduating in 1971. Mize went on to earn his J.D. from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 1974.

After graduating from law school, Mize entered into solo practice, where he would remain until his appointment to the Superior Court in 2000. During his time in private practice, Mize specialized in family law. He was certified as a Family Law Specialist by the California State Bar.

While on the bench, Judge Mize has served as an assistant presiding judge and a presiding judge. He has also served as the supervising judge for the Family Law and Probate Courts. During his time as a Superior Court judge, he also helped to spearhead a one-day divorce program that seeks to help willing parties dissolve their marriage quickly.

He was named the Judicial Officer of the Year by the Family Law Section of the State Bar of California in 2013, and the Judge of the Year by the Sacramento Bar Association in 2009. His other awards include the Alba Witkin Humanitarian Award in 2007 by the California Judge's Association, and the Education and Community Outreach Award in 2008 by the Center for Youth's Citizenship.

His memberships have included the past-president of the Sacramento County Bar Associaton, the Sacramento Young Lawyers Association, and the Capitol City Trial Lawyers Association. He has also served on the board of directors for the Association of Certified Family Law Specialists.

Judge Mize has served as an instructor for the Center for Judiciary Education and Research.

He is also an active member of the Sacramento community. Mize is the co-founder of the Sharing God's Bounty program that seeks to feed Sacramento's homeless population. The program is run out of the St. Philomene Parish in Sacramento and has provided over one million meals since its inception. He has also worked to provide pro bono legal services to indigent clients within the community.
