Judge James M. Bixler - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. James M. Bixler (Ret.) was a judge for the Eighth Judicial District Court in Clark County, Nevada. He was elected to the bench in 2006 and retired in 2015. After his retirement, Bixler continued to preside as a senior judge of the Court.

He received a B.B.A. from Eastern New Mexico University in 1971. Bixler went on to earn a J.D. from Baylor Law School in 1973.

While pursuing his undergraduate degree, he joined the U.S. Marines. After enlisting, Bixler served in combat in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. After his tour of duty, he returned to his studies.

Upon completing his law degree, Bixler relocated to Las Vegas, where he became a law clerk with the North Las Vegas City Attorney’s Office. After his clerkship, he then worked as a deputy city attorney there. In addition to his position at the City Attorney’s Office, Bixler served as the first North Las Vegas Municipal Court Administrator.

Later, he joined Franklin, Bixler & Damus, Chtd., as a founding partner. He remained in private practice for six years.

Then, in 1980, he was elected to serve as a justice of the peace with the Las Vegas Justice Court. Bixler remained in that position until his election to the District Court bench in 2006. During his tenure on the Justice Court, he served three terms as its chief judge.

While on the District Court bench, Bixler presided over a criminal and civil split calendar.

He was born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska.
