The Hon. James J. McBride (Ret.) served as a judge for the Superior Court of San Francisco County in California. He was initially appointed to the Municipal Court of San Francisco by former governor Pete Wilson on January 27, 1994. He was then elevated to the Superior Court of San Francisco County upon the unification of municipal and superior courts in 1998. He retired from the bench on February 15, 2015.
McBride earned a B.A. in psychology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1973. He continued his studies at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, receiving a J.D. in 1979.
McBride began his legal career in the Office of the District Attorney of San Francisco County in 1979. He served as an assistant district attorney for five years, eventually leaving the public sector in 1985.
He then entered private practice, where he handled business litigation, criminal defense, and personal injury cases until his appointment to the bench.
McBride was a recipient of the Trial Judge of the Year Award from the San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association (2001) as well as the Barristers Choice Award from the San Francisco Bar Association (2003).
McBride was born and raised in San Francisco, California. He has served as a police officer for the San Francisco Police Department.
He is registered as a Democrat.
