The Hon. James E. Simmons, Jr. is a judge for the Superior Court of San Diego County in California. He was appointed to the bench by former governor Jerry Brown on November 2, 2017, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. David M. Szumowski.
Simmons earned a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley. He then received a J.D. from Golden Gate University School of Law.
Simmons began his legal career as a deputy city attorney in the Office of the City Attorney of San Diego. Then, in 2006, he joined the Office of the District Attorney of San Diego County, where he served as a deputy district attorney. During his tenure there, he worked in the Juvenile Division, the Superior Court Division, and the Gangs Division.
He has volunteered for Project LEAD, a law-related education program designed to teach children about the criminal justice system.
Simmons was raised in Los Angeles, California by a single mother, a cafeteria worker who earned minimum wage.
He is registered as a Democrat.
