Judge Jaime E. Tijerina - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Jaime E. Tijerina is a justice of the 13th Court of Appeals (Place 4) of Texas. He was appointed to the Court of Appeals by Governor Greg Abbott in 2019. He filled the position left vacant by former District Court judge Rodolfo Delgado.

Tijerina had also received appointments by Governor Abbott to serve as a judge for the 93rd District Court (2018) and the 464th District Court (2019). Though, his first stint in the judiciary came in 2013 after he was appointed to serve as a judge for the 92nd District Court by former Governor Rick Perry. Tijerina held that seat for one year.

During his hiatus from the bench, he served as a city attorney with the City of Mission for four years beginning in 2014.

A veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, Tijerina joined the United States Army in 1988. Over the course of his military career, he served as a Command Judge Advocate for the 211th Regional Support Group during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2009 and was a legal advisor to the Afghan National Police Legal Affairs during Operation Enduring Freedom in Kabul, Afghanistan, in 2012. He has since served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserves’ Judge Advocate General’s Corps and as team director for the 1st Legal Operations Detachment in Houston. For his service overseas, Tijerina was awarded a Bronze Star.

He received a B.B.A. from the University of Texas-Pan American in 1991. Tijerina then completed a J.D. at Texas Southern University, Thurgood Marshall School of Law in 1995.

He began his civilian legal career as an attorney in private practice in 1995, a position he would maintain until his appointment to the bench in 2013. In addition to his private practice, Tijerina served for twelve years as the elected Kenedy County attorney.

His memberships included the State Bar of Texas, the College of the State Bar, the Texas Bar Foundation (Fellow), the Texas Prosecutor’s Society, and the Texas District and County Attorneys Association (director). Tijerina also served as a board member of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Alumni Advisory Board and was on the board of directors of the Food Bank RGV.

Away from the bench, Tijerina is the owner of a cattle and hunting ranch in Kenedy County, Texas.
