The Honorable J. William McLafferty

The Hon. J. William McLafferty (deceased) was a judge for the Santa Barbara County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Pete Wilson in 1997. He remained on the bench until his death in 2010.

McLafferty received his bachelor's degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1965. He went on to earn his J.D. from Duquesne University Law School in 1968.

After graduating from law school, McLafferty served as assistant general counsel for the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh and also worked in private practice in Pittsburgh before moving to California. Once in California, McLafferty practiced at the law firm of Archibald and Spray, where he would eventually make partner.

During his time on the bench, McLafferty served as a Presiding Judge of the Court from 2007 to 2008. He also served as an Assistant Presiding Judge prior to that.

McLafferty also served as a director of the Santa Barbara County Bar Association.

He was born in Butler, Pennsylvania in 1939. At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife Carol and their four grown children.
