Judge J. Scott Novy - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. J. Scott Novy is a judge for the 188th District Court of Texas in Gregg County. He was elected to the bench in 2018, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. David Brabham.

Novy earned a B.B.A. from Baylor University in 1983. Then, in 1986, he completed a J.D. at Baylor University School of Law.

After graduating from law school, Novy began his legal career as an assistant district attorney in the McLennan County District Attorney's Office (1987 to 1989) and the Gregg County District Attorney's Office (1989 to 1992). He then entered into private practice, working as an associate at the Pritchard & Pritchard Law Firm. Eight years later, he started his own private practice, where he handled civil, criminal, estate planning, probate, and guardianship matters. Novy supplemented his practice with service as a judge for the City of Lakeport Municipal Court (1993 to 2018).

His memberships have included the Gregg County Bar Association, the Women's Center of East Texas, and the Pastoral Council for St. Mary's Catholic Church. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors for House of Disciples and the East Texas Literacy Council.

Novy was raised in Longview, where he graduated from Longview High School in 1979.

He is registered as a Republican.
