Hon. Irma J. Brown (Ret.) was a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. She was originally appointed to the Compton Municipal Court in 1986 by former Governor George Deukmejian. She holds the distinction of being the first woman to be appointed a judge to that court. Brown was subsequently elevated to the Superior Court as a result of the unification of the courts in 2000. She retired in 2021.
While on the Superior Court, Brown served as a supervising judge for the Inglewood Juvenile Court. She began her judicial career as a commissioner for the Compton Municipal Court in 1982.
Brown received a B.A. in sociology from Loyola Marymount University in 1970. She went on to complete a J.D. from Loyola Law School in 1973.
After graduating from law school, Brown joined the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles as an attorney in 1975. Then, in 1978, she became a partner in the law firm of Hudson, Sandoz, & Brown, where she practiced for four years.
In 2010, Brown was inducted into the John M. Langston Bar Association Hall of Fame. She was also a past president of the Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles.
She was a registered Democrat.
