Judge Hunter W. Carroll - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Hunter W. Carroll is a judge for the 12th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida in Sarasota County. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Rick Scott in 2015, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. James S. Parker (Ret.).

The 12th Judicial Circuit includes DeSoto, Manatee, and Sarasota Counties. Carroll has presided in the Civil Division in Sarasota County.

He received a B.A. in political science and a B.S.B.A. in finance from the University of Florida in 1997. Carroll went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Florida, Fredric G. Levin College of Law, in 2000. While attending law school, he worked as a summer associate at Williams Parker (1999) and served as a legal intern for the Office of the State Attorney for the Eighth Judicial Circuit (2000).

After completing his internship, Carroll became a senior staff attorney to the Hon. Charles T. Wells, former Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court. He served in this capacity for two years. It was at that time, Carroll entered into private practice. He first joined Carlton Fields, where he served as a member of its Appellate and Litigation Groups.

Then, in 2005, he joined Carlton & Carroll, and in 2008, he joined Matthews Eastmoore. While at the firm, Carroll practiced education law involving matters such as First Amendment issues, labor disputes, privacy concerns, defense of claims, and tax election referenda. He was also a member of the firm's Litigation Group and handled governmental issues involving violations of the States Sunshine Law and Public Records Law. He remained in practice there until his appointment to the Circuit Court in 2015.

Carroll is a past president of the Sarasota County Bar Association.

He is a native of Sarasota, Florida, where he graduated Valedictorian from Sarasota High School.
