Biography

Hon. Hilary A. Chittick is a judge of the Superior Court of Fresno County in California. She won re-election unopposed in 2016. Chittick was appointed by Governor Gray Davis on August 12, 2002. Chittick held the position of Presiding Judge of the Fresno Superior Court from 2007-2008 and was the first ever female to hold that position in the history of Fresno County.

She received her bachelor's degree from the University of California, San Diego in 1975 and went on to earn her J.D. from the University of California Hastings College of Law in 1979.

Judge Chittick began her career as a deputy public defender for the Fresno County Public Defender's Office. In 1989 she became a partner at the firm Gilmore, Wood, Vinnard, Chittick & Magness in Fresno, CA until 2002 when she was appointed to the Superior Court. She is also a San Joaquin College of Law Professor.

As a judge on the Superior Court Chittick has presided over the Behavioral Health Court as well as the Veterans Treatment Court. She also founded the Fresno Superior Court Proposition 47 Drug Court and was the creative force behind the development of an app that matches drug offenders to real-time treatment options. Judge Chittick prefers offering treatment and prevention options to the offender over imprisonment.

Some of her many awards include: 2001 Hanson Award Recipient, Women's Equality Day Award, and she was also recognized as one of the Top 10 Business & Professional Women in Fresno in 2009. She has also served as president of the Fresno County Women Lawyers, chair of the Fresno Juvenile Justice Commission, as well as served on the California Tribal Court-State Court Forum.
