Judge Helen Voutsinas - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Helen Voutsinas is a justice for the Nassau County Supreme Court in the Tenth Judicial District of New York. She was initially elected to the Nassau County District Court in 2011. In 2019, she was elected to the Nassau County Supreme Court.

Voutsinas earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from St. John’s University in 1996. She then continued her studies at St. John’s University School of Law, where she earned her J.D. in 1999.

She began her legal career as an associate at Donohue, McGanan & Catalano in 1999. During her two-year tenure there, she specialized in personal injury and commercial matters. She left the firm in order to serve as an assistant town attorney for the Town of North Hempstead.

In 2003, Voutsinas spent a year serving as deputy majority counsel for the Nassau County Legislature. Then, in 2004, she became a principal law clerk for the Hon. Steven M. Jaeger of the Nassau County Court. She worked in that capacity until her election to the bench.

Her memberships have included the Nassau County Bar Association, the Nassau County Women’s Bar Association, and the Long Island Hispanic Bar Association. She has served as a board member of the Theodore Roosevelt American Inns of Court. She has also been the vice president and president of the Long Island Hispanic Bar Association; president of the Nassau County District Court Judges Association; and president of the Nassau County Women’s Bar Association.

Voutsinas is the daughter of immigrants. Her father is from Greece and her mother is from the Dominican Republic. As such, she is the first female Hispanic judge to be elected in Nassau County. She is also fluent in both Spanish and Greek.

She is registered as a Democrat.
