Biography

The Hon. Gonzalo P. Curiel is a District Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California. He was nominated by President Barack Obama in November 2011 and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in September 2012. He filled the seat vacated by the Hon. Thomas J. Whelan.

Judge Curiel is a registered Democrat.

He received his B.A. from Indiana University in 1976. He went on to earn his J.D. from Indiana University School of Law in 1979.

After graduating from law school, Curiel joined the Dyer, Indiana law firm of James, James, and Manning, where he practiced for seven years. He then joined the Monterey, California law firm of Barbosa and Vera in 1986.

Curiel left private practice in 1989 to join the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of California, where he served as an assistant U.S. Attorney until 2002. During his tenure in the Southern District, Curiel served as the deputy chief of the Narcotics Enforcement Section for several years and was ultimately named the chief of the Unit in 1999. He also served on detail to the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Internal Affairs for one year beginning in 1997. After leaving the Southern District in 2002, he then joined the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California, where he served as an assistant U.S. Attorney until receiving an appointment to the state bench in 2006.

It was at that time that Curiel was appointed to serve as a judge for the San Diego County Superior Court by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, a position he would hold for six years.

During his time on the federal bench, Judge Curiel presided over civil fraud lawsuits against Trump University.

Judge Curiel, who was born in East Chicago, Indiana, was admitted to the bar in Illinois, Indiana, and California.

His memberships have included the American Bar Association, the State Bar of California, the San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association, the William B. Enright Inn of Court, the San Diego County Judges Association, the California Judges Association, the Latino Judges Association, the National Hispanic Prosecutors Association, and the Hispanic National Bar Association.

In his free time, Judge Curiel enjoys playing the guitar.
