Hon. Geronda V. Carter is the Chief Judge for the Clayton County Superior Court in Georgia. She was elected to the bench in 2006.
As the most senior judge in Clayton County Superior Court, Carter was named Chief Judge of the Clayton Judicial Circuit on January 1, 2018. In addition, she has presided over the Parental Accountability Court.
Prior to her tenure there, she sat as the presiding magistrate judge and also served as a designated Superior Court judge (2005 to 2006).
Before beginning her judicial career, Carter was a former Special Assistant United States Attorney for the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia, an assistant regional counsel with the Social Security Administration, and an associate in the Jonesboro law office of Oliver & Winkle, P.C.
She received a B.A. in psychology from Spelman College in 1993. Carter went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Miami School of Law in 1996. While a law student, she was selected to the Psychology, Public Policy & the Law Law Review Editorial Board and the Moot Court Board.
In 2016, Carter received a doctorate of theology degree from Restoration Theological Seminary.
She is admitted to practice in Georgia, Florida, and the District of Columbia.
Carter has volunteered as a career coach with the Kennesaw State University Executive MBA Program.
Her civic involvement has included the Board of Directors of Arts Clayton, Inc.
Carter received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the NAACP, the Lucy Terry Price Award from the National Black History Task Force, the Distinguished Service Award from the Atlanta Club of Frontiers International, Inc., and the Community Award from the Association of Christian Ministers of Clayton County.
