Biography

The Hon. Gayle P. Roberts is a judge for the Family Court of the City of New York in Bronx County. She was initially appointed to the bench by former Mayor Rudy Giuliani in 1997. She was subsequently re-appointed by former Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2006 and Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2016.

Roberts earned a B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1979. Then, in 1982, she completed a J.D. from Tulane University School of Law.

After graduating from law school, Roberts became a staff attorney for the Reginald Heber Smith Community Lawyer Fellowship. The following year, she joined the Office of the District Attorney of Bronx County, where she served as an assistant district attorney until 1997.

Her memberships have included the New York State Bar Association President’s Committee on Access to Justice; the College Council of the State University of New York School of Optometry; the Twelfth Judicial District Gender Bias Committee; and the Board of Directors of the Black Bar Association of Bronx County. She was also secretary, treasurer, vice-president, and president of the Association of Family Court Judges of the State of New York.

She has been named Family Court Judge of the Year (2014) by the New York State Family Court Judges Association and Jurist of the Year (2011) by the Metropolitan Black Bar Association. She is also a recipient of the Ivan Warner Community Service Award from the Black Bar Association of Bronx County and a Distinguished Service Award from the CUNY Black Law Students Association.
