Biography

The Hon. Gary Y. Tanaka is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He succeeded the Hon. Kenneth A. Black when he was appointed to the bench by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on July 16, 2009.

Judge Tanaka is a registered Republican.

He received his B.S. from Western State University. He went on to earn his J.D. from Western State University School of Law.

After graduating from law school, Tanaka joined the law firm Astor & Phillips as an associate in 1991.

He was with the firm for nine years when he left to join the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office in 2000 as a public defender. Then, in 2001, he became a deputy alternate public defender for the Los Angeles County Alternate Public Defender’s Office. After five years with the Public Defender’s Office, Tanaka served as a deputy county counsel and subsequently as a senior deputy county counsel for the Los Angeles Office of the County Counsel in 2006. He remained at the County Counsel's Office until his appointment to the bench in 2009.

Among his assignments on the bench, Judge Tanaka has presided over preliminary hearings in the Torrance Court.
