Friedman earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He then completed a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law.
Before joining the bench, Friedman handled cases as a deputy district attorney as well as a civil litigator. Then, over the course of his judicial career, he presided over the juvenile division, the family law division, and the civil division.
Friedman received a public scolding from the Commission on Judicial Performance after placing the head of a rattlesnake outside the cell of a criminal defendant.
Born and raised in Bakersfield, Friedman graduated from Garces Memorial High School. His wife started the women’s tennis team at California State University, Bakersfield. She also collaborated with the Hon. Brian McNamara to institute a sports management program at the university.
Friedman’s family first settled in the area after his grandfather emigrated to the United States from the Basque Country in 1897. He worked as a sheepherder, eventually starting his own ranch in east Bakersfield.
