The Hon. Frank L. Birchak is a judge for the Superior Court of San Diego County in California. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jerry Brown in 2016, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Thomas P. Nugent.
Birchak earned a B.A. from Trinity University. He then received a J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center.
He began his legal career as an associate at Guiberson Law Offices in 1999. Then, in 2001, he joined the Southwest Regional Juvenile Defender Center as an associate director. While holding this position, he also worked as a supervising attorney for the Juvenile Defense Clinic at the University of Houston Law Center.
Birchak relocated to San Diego in 2004. He accepted a position at the Office of the Alternate Public Defender of San Diego County, where he worked as a deputy public defender for ten years. He was then promoted to Director of Training, Recruitment, and Career Development for the Office of the Public Defender of San Diego. He held this position until his appointment to the bench.
Birchak is registered as a Democrat.
