Judge Eric D. Coleman - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Eric D. Coleman (Ret.) is a judge trial referee for the Hartford Judicial District Superior Court in Connecticut.

Prior to joining the bench, Coleman managed his own private practice, the Law Office of Eric D. Coleman, having opened the office in 1986. Before that, he was a consultant at Aetna Life & Casualty (1981 to 1986), an attorney with Connecticut Public Defender Services (1978 to 1981), and an attorney for Hartford Neighborhood Legal Services, Inc. (1977 to 1978).

In the political arena, Coleman was a representative in the Connecticut General Assembly, representing District 2 (1982 to 1994), and later became a senator in the Connecticut State Senate (1995 to 2017). During his time as a legislator, he served as Deputy President Pro Tempore of the Connecticut State Senate beginning in 1995 and was the former Deputy Speaker (1993) and Majority Whip (1991) of the Connecticut House of Representatives. In 2001, Coleman became the first African-American to chair the Judiciary Committee and later served as chairman of the Planning and Development Committee.

He received a B.A. in political science from Columbia University in 1973. Coleman went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1977.

His memberships have included the Hartford County Bar Association and the American Bar Association. Coleman also served as a member of the Board of Directors of Greater Hartford Legal Assistance Association Incorporated and the Caldwell McCoy Scholarship Fund and was the Director of Greater Hartford Legal Aid, Humanidad Incorporated, and the Bloomfield Education Foundation.

He was born in New Haven, Connecticut. Coleman and his wife, Pamela, have three children.

He is registered as a Democrat.
