Biography

The Hon. Elia Ortiz is a judge for the Napa County Superior Court in California. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jerry Brown in 2012. She filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Raymond A. Guadagni (Ret.). At the time of her appointment, Ortiz was the first Latin American to be seated in Napa County.

She is a registered Democrat.

Judge Ortiz received her B.A. from Sonoma State University. She went on to earn her J.D. from Golden Gate University School of Law.

Prior to her appointment to the bench, Ortiz spent her entire legal career in the public sector. After practicing as a deputy public defender in the counties of Riverside and Solano, Ortiz joined the Napa County Public Defender's Office in 2001. During her tenure there, she specialized in cases involving felonies, homicides, juvenile delinquency, and conservatorships. She remained in Napa County until her appointment to the Superior Court in 2012.

While on the bench, Judge Ortiz has served as the Presiding Judge of the Court. She has also presided in the Civil, Criminal, and Appellate Divisions.
