The Hon. Edward J. Volz, Jr. (Ret.) was a judge for the 20th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. Volz was elected to the bench in 1990. He retired in 2015.
The 20th Judicial Circuit encompasses Charlotte County, Collier County, Glades County, Hendry County, and Lee County.
Volz received his B.S. from Villanova University in 1968. He went on to earn a J.D. from Fordham University School of Law in 1971.
Shortly after graduating from law school, Volz, who was born in the Bronx, New York, began his legal career as an assistant district attorney in the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office. He served in that capacity until 1974, at which time he entered into private practice. He supplemented his practice with service as counsel to the New York Legislature (1974 to 1976) and as an assistant town attorney for the Town of Islip (1976 to 1978). Volz returned to the District Attorney's Office in 1978 and remained there until 1983.
It was at that time, Volz relocated to Florida. He became an assistant state attorney with the Office of the State Attorney for the Twelfth Judicial Circuit in 1983, and, in 1990, he began working concurrently as an assistant U.S. attorney at the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida. He held both positions until his election to the bench in 1990.
He has taught as an instructor at Edison Community College and Florida Gulf Coast University.
His memberships included the Lee County Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, the Conference of Florida Circuit Court Judges, and The Florida Bar.
