The Hon. Douglas W. Stern is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 2013 by former Governor Jerry Brown. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Gary R. Hahn (Ret.).
He is a registered Democrat.
Judge Stern graduated with his B.A. in political science and economics from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1975. He went on to earn his J.D. from UCLA Law School in 1978.
After graduating from law school, Stern joined the law firm of Miller and Mandel as an associate in 1978. The firm then merged with Pepper, Hamilton, and Scheetz in 1982. Stern was made a partner of the newly-formed Pepper, Hamilton, and Scheetz in 1986. He continued to practice for the firm for seven years until becoming a partner at the firm of Fulbright and Jaworski LLP in 1990. He would remain with the firm, where he practiced business litigation, until 2009.
In 1999, Stern, who is a California native, ran a successful bid for a seat on the Rancho Palos Verdes City Council. He served as City Councilman from 1999 to 2011. He also served two separate terms as the Rancho Palos Verdes City Mayor in 2003 and 2008.
Stern joined the Fidelity National Law Group in 2009, holding multiple positions during his short time there, which included senior trial counsel, a litigation manager, and ultimately reaching the level of Vice President. He left in 2012 to practice for a year as an attorney at the law firm of Gibbs, Giden, Locher, Turner, and Senet LLP, before entering into private practice, opening the Law Offices of Douglas W. Stern in 2013.
