Biography

The Hon. Douglas M. Prouty is a judge for the Plumas County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jerry Brown in 2018. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Ira R. Kaufman (Ret.).

He is a registered Democrat.

Judge Prouty received his B.A. from Dickinson College. He went on to earn his J.D. from the San Francisco Law School.

Besides a brief stint as a part-time attorney with the San Francisco County District Attorney's Office, Prouty spent most of his legal career in private practice. After leaving the D.A.'s office in 1983, he worked as an associate at the Law Offices of James Paul Green from 1982 to 1987, and with the Law Offices of Robert F. French from 1987 to 1990. He then entered into solo practice, where he would remain until his appointment to the bench. During his time as a sole practitioner, Prouty served as owner and mediator at Timberline Mediation Services from 1994 to 2001. He then began working as a contract public defender in 2001.

He also served as a judge pro tem for the traffic and small claims courts.

While on the bench, Judge Prouty has served as the Presiding Judge of the Plumas County Grand Jury.

At the time of his appointment to the Superior Court, Prouty was a member of the Executive Committee for the Plumas County Community Corrections Partnership.
