Biography

The Hon. Douglas E. Smith (Ret.) was a judge for the Eighth Judicial District Court in Clark County, Nevada. He was elected to the bench in 2008 and retained in 2014. Smith retired from the bench in March 2019.

He received a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University. Smith went on to earn a J.D. from Whittier College School of Law.

Smith worked in the public sector prior to joining the bench. He first joined the Clark County Public Defender’s Office in 1982 and remained there until joining the Clark County District Attorney’s Office three years later.

In 1995, Smith was elected to serve as a justice of the peace with the Las Vegas Justice Court, where he would later serve as its chief justice. He is also credited with helping to establish a drug court program for the Justice Court.

Smith is married and has three sons.
