Judge D'Metria Benson - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. D’Metria Benson is a judge for the County Court at Law No. 1 in Dallas County, Texas. She was initially elected to the bench in 2006 and re-elected in 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022.

Prior to her election, Benson worked as an attorney in private practice, specializing in constitutional, civil rights, employment law and litigation. She has also served as an assistant city attorney for the City of Dallas and the City of Fort Worth.

Benson earned a B.A. from Texas Christian University. She then completed a J.D. at the University of Texas at Austin School of Law.

Her professional memberships have included the Mac Taylor American Inn of Court, the Dallas Young Lawyers Foundation, the Texas Bar Association, the Dallas Bar Association, and the Women and the Law Section of the State Bar of Texas. She has served on the Board of the Dallas County Dispute Resolution Center and the DFW Chapter of the National Employment Lawyers Association.

She has also been a member of the Junior League of Dallas; a board member of Theatre Three and Dallas Wind Symphony; and president of Voices of Change.

When not presiding over the bench, Benson is actively involved with her local church. She attends St. Matthew’s Episcopal Cathedral and is a member of the cathedral choir. She also enjoys playing scrabble, traveling, reading, and making jewelry.

Benson is registered as a Democrat.
