Judge Diane E. Bessen - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Diane E. Bessen is a judge for the Fulton County State Court in Georgia. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Roy Barnes in July 2002.

During her tenure on the State Court, Bessen served as its Chief Judge from 2017 to 2018.

Prior to her appointment, she sat for seven years as a judge for the Fulton County Magistrate Court beginning in 1995. Bessen also presided as a pro hac vice judge for the City of Atlanta Traffic Court (1996 to 2001).

She received a B.A. from Emory University in 1979. Bessen went on to complete a J.D. at Emory University School of Law in 1986.

After graduating from law school, she began her legal career as an attorney at McGinn, Webb & Warner (1986 to 1992) before opening her own private solo practice in 1992. Bessen maintained her law practice until 2000.

She also taught medical malpractice litigation as an adjunct professor at Emory University School of Law.

Her memberships have included the Board of Governors of State Bar of Georgia, the Judicial Council Cyber Security, the Lawyers’ Foundation of Georgia (Fellow), the Council of State Court Judges, the Lawyers Club of Atlanta, the North Fulton Bar Association, the Sandy Springs Bar Association, the Georgia Association of Women Lawyers, the Georgia Association of Black Women Lawyers, the Lamar Inn of Court, the Atlanta Bar Association (past chair, Judicial Section), and the American Bar Association National Council of State Trial Judges (delegate).

Bessen also sat as a member of the State Bar of Georgia’s Legislative Advisory Committee, New Courts Commission, and E-File Committee, as well as the Statewide Judiciary E-Filing Steering Committee, the Fulton County Court’s Joint Governance Committee, and the Judicial Council Committee on Technology.

She has served as co-editor of Atlanta Lawyer Magazine.

Bessen received the Unsung Hero Award from the Anti-Defamation League, the Professionalism Award from the Atlanta Bar Association, and the Champion of Justice Award from the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association.

She was born in Liberty, New York. Bessen and her husband, Steven Weiner, have two children. In her free time, she enjoys cooking and golfing.
