Judge Deborah Silverman Katz - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Deborah Silverman Katz is the assignment judge for the Vicinage 4 Superior Court in Camden County in New Jersey. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jon Corzine in 2008 and reappointed for tenure in 2015.

Silverman Katz was named the assignment judge of the Camden County Vicinage by the Hon. Stuart Rabner, Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court in 2014. Prior to that, she held assignments in the Civil Division (2008, 2011 to 2014) and the Family Division (2008 to 2011) in Camden County. While in the Civil Division, Silverman Katz presided in the Special Civil Part.

At the time of her appointment to the Superior Court, she was the county counsel for Camden County. Silverman Katz first joined the County Counsel’s Office as an assistant county counsel in 1997, rising through the ranks to become first assistant county counsel and then the county counsel there.

She received a B.A. from Adelphi University in 1981. Silverman Katz went on to complete a J.D. at Hofstra University, Maurice A. Deane School of Law in 1983. While a law student, she served as a law clerk for the Hon. Alfred Samanga with the Nassau County Criminal Court and also interned at the Community Legal Assistance Corporation in Hempstead, New York.

She was admitted to practice in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey.

After graduating from law school, Silverman Katz began her legal career as an associate in the Haddonfield law firm of Tomar, Seliger, Simonoff, Adourian & O’Brien. While there, her areas of practice included residential and commercial real estate, libel and defamation law, and asbestos litigation. Then, in 1988, she helped found the law firm of Begelman & Katz, practicing there until 1991.

It was at that time, Silverman Katz became assistant disciplinary counsel to the Disciplinary Board of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, where she was tasked with investigating and prosecuting ethics claims filed against state attorneys. She remained in that capacity until 1996.

In 2018, Silverman Katz filed a $1 million tort claim against the City of Camden, its parking authority, and Camden County after being injured in a fall near the courthouse.

At the time of her appointment to assignment judge, she resided in Cherry Hill with her family.
