The Hon. Deborah Barnes is a U.S. Magistrate Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California, Sacramento Division. She was appointed to the District Court in 2016. She filled the seat vacated by the elevation of the Hon. Dale A. Drozd to District Judge.
Judge Barnes received her B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1981. She went on to earn her J.D. from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law in 1986.
Prior to her appointment to the District Court, Barnes had served as a deputy attorney general with the California Department of Justice's Office of the Attorney General since 2003. She also worked for the A.G.'s office from 1993 to 2000. Barnes worked for the California Environmental Protection Agency from 2000 to 2003. Her legal background also includes a stint with the Federal Defender's Office for the Eastern District (1988 to 1993), the law firm of Weintraub, Genshlea, Hardy, Erick, and Brown (1987 to 1988), and the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office (1986 to 1987).
