The Honorable Dean H. Hansell

The Hon. Dean H. Hansell is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 2016 by former Governor Jerry Brown. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Arthur H. Jean (Ret.).

He is a registered Democrat.

Judge Hansell graduated with his B.A. from Denison University in 1974. He went on to earn his J.D. from Northwestern University. He was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, and Phi Delta Theta honor societies.

After graduating from law school, Hansell became an assistant attorney general for the Illinois Attorney General's Office in 1977. While at the A.G.'s office, he prosecuted environmental law. In 1980, Hansell became a prosecutor for the Federal Trade Commission in Washington, D.C. In 1982 Hansell joined the Los Angeles law firm of Lillick, McHose, and Charles as an associate from 1982 to 1984. He would then join the New York-based law firms of Donovan, Leisure, Newton, and Irvine from 1984 to 1986 and Dewey and LeBoeuf from 1986 to 1988. He was ultimately named a partner at Dewey and LeBoeuf in 1988 and remained with the firm until 2012.

In 1997 Hansell was appointed Los Angeles Police Commissioner by then-mayor Richard Riordan. He served in that capacity until 2001.

Hansell joined the law firm of Hogan Lovells US, LLP in 2012 as a partner and would remain with the firm until his appointment to the Superior Court in 2016. While at the firm, Hansell's areas of practice focused on complex litigation, consumer protection, insurance, reinsurance, employment, and environmental cases.

Hansell co-authored a book on reinsurance law.

Hansell has been an active member of the LGBTQ community and was a co-founder of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation organization also known as GLAAD.

He has also served as the Los Angeles Fire and Police Pensions Commissioner and the Los Angeles City Information Technology Commissioner.

Some of his many memberships have included the California Bar Foundation, the Los Angeles Police Foundation, the Los Angeles LGBT Center, Sheriff's Department Working Group, and the Los Angeles County Citizens Oversight Commission, just to name a few.
