Biography

The Hon. David R. Lampe is a judge for the Superior Court of Kern County in California. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in June 2007, filling a newly created position.

Lampe earned a B.A. in political science from California State University, Bakersfield. He then completed a J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law in 1977.

He began his legal career as a civil attorney in 1977. He first worked as an associate at Borton, Petrini & Conron. He practiced there for eight years, eventually rising to partner. He then left to join LeBeau-Thelen as a partner in 1985. He held this position until his appointment to the bench.

Lampe served as Director of the Alliance of California Judges.

He acquired national attention for his ruling against the State of California, which initiated a case against a Bakersfield-based baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple. Lampe ruled in favor of the defendant, arguing that the baker’s actions were protected by the right to freedom of speech under the First Amendment.

Lampe is registered as a Republican.
