The Hon. David R. Chaffee is a judge of the Superior Court of Orange County in California. He was appointed to the Municipal Court of Orange County by former Governor Pete Wilson on January 4, 1994. He was then elevated to the Superior Court of Orange County on January 8, 1997, filling a newly created position.
Chaffee attended California State University, Long Beach, where he earned a B.A. in history in 1969. He briefly attended the University of Arizona School of Law in 1970, eventually completing a J.D. at Loyola University School of Law in 1973.
Chaffee began his legal career in 1974. He served as deputy attorney general for the Criminal Division of the California State Department of Justice. Four years later he joined the County of Orange as deputy county counsel, advancing to senior deputy county counsel by the time of his appointment to the Municipal Court of Orange County. During his time with the County of Orange, he specialized in probate, tax litigation, and environmental and land use litigation.
