Judge David McDowell - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. David McDowell is a judge for the Maricopa County Superior Court in Arizona. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Doug Ducey in March 2021.

During his judicial tenure, McDowell has held an assignment in the Family Court.

Prior to joining the bench, he was a litigation chair and partner at the Rose Law Group in Scottsdale. McDowell, who joined the firm in 2014, handled civil litigation matters, including premise and product liability litigation, contract and real estate disputes, administrative agency proceedings, and employment claims. In addition, his practice included transactional matters such as commercial real estate purchase and sales agreements, financing documents, contracts with governmental agencies, company governance documents, and employment agreements.

McDowell had also sat as a judge pro tempore for the Maricopa County Superior Court since 2017.

Before that, he was a co-managing partner in the Phoenix law firm of Renaud Cook Drury Mesaros (2006 to 2014). McDowell previously practiced there as a senior associate beginning in 2001 (2001 to 2005). In between that time, he was the managing attorney of the Phoenix office of Wood, Smith, Henning & Berman (2005 to 2006).

McDowell received a B.A. in business administration from Washington State University in 1989. He went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Idaho College of Law in 1994.

After graduating from law school, McDowell began his legal career as an associate at Jerome Eline, PA in Vancouver, Washington (1994 to 2001).

He has sat as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Phoenix Zoo/Arizona Center for Nature Conservation.

McDowell was also a volunteer for the Fiesta Bowl parade, UMOM, and Big Brothers and Big Sisters. In addition, he served as a volunteer for the State Bar of Arizona’s program to assist Hurricane Katrina victims forced to relocate to Arizona in 2006.
