Biography

The Hon. David L. Foster is a part-time judge for the Geneva City Court in Ontario County in the Seventh Judicial District of New York. He was appointed to the position by Geneva City Mayor Ron Alcock in 2015. He filled the vacancy left by the Hon. Bram Lehman.

Judge Foster graduated with his B.A. in economics and political science from Hobart and William Smith Colleges in 1975. He went on to earn his J.D. from Hofstra University, Maurice A. Deane School of Law in 1978. Later, in 2005, Foster also received his M.Div. from the St. Bernard School of Theology and Ministry.

Foster, who is a Vietnam Veteran, served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1968 to 1972. During that time, he was assigned to the 1st Marine Airwing and the 1st Marine Division in DaNang, Vietnam from 1970 to 1971.

After graduating from law school, he began his legal career as a sole practitioner at his own law firm in 1979. His areas of practice have included non-profit organizations and personal injury litigation.

In 1988, while still maintaining his law practice, Foster began serving as a county attorney with the Yates County Attorney’s Office, where he served until 1994. He also served as an executive director of the Legal Aid Society in Wayne County from 1999 to 2012 and was a city attorney for the City of Geneva from 2008 to 2014. He then became a town attorney for the Town of Seneca Falls in 2017.

In 2012, Foster authored a fictional book depicting a Marine radioman’s experiences during the Vietnam War.
