The Hon. David L. Berry is a judge for the Superior Court of San Diego County in California. He was elected to the bench in 2012.
Berry earned a B.S. in thermal and environmental engineering from Southern Illinois University in 1982. He then received a J.D. from Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago-Kent College of Law in 1985.
Prior to his election to the bench, Berry served as a deputy district attorney for the Office of the District Attorney of San Diego County. During his twenty-five year tenure there, he prosecuted a diverse range of cases, including murder, robbery, gang violence, sexual assault, carjacking, and kidnapping cases.
After the Three Strikes Law was implemented in 1994, Berry served as an original member of the Three Strikes Team of the Office of the District Attorney, eventually acting as its leader. He also worked on its Major Violator Team and its Metro Arson Strike Team, and he led its Superior Court Felony Trial Team. He eventually advanced to Assistant Chief of the East County Branch of the Office of the District Attorney.
Berry has volunteered as a little league baseball coach. He has also instructed faith formation classes at his church. He played significant roles in the establishment of community facilities, such as a new YMCA building and a community park. In recognition of his community outreach efforts, he was awarded the San Diego County Bar Association’s Community Service Award in 2011.
