Judge David L. Ashworth - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. David L. Ashworth is a judge for the Lancaster County Court of Common Pleas in Pennsylvania. He was elected to the bench in November 1999.

During his judicial tenure, Ashworth has presided over Criminal Court, Civil Court and Adult Drug Court and was named president judge of the Lancaster County Court of Common Pleas by the county’s board of judges on January 6, 2020. As such, he is tasked with overseeing the administrative functions of the court system of Lancaster County. Ashworth is also credited with helping to create the Adult Drug Court, Veterans Court and Mental Health Court.

He received a B.A. in English from Gettysburg College in 1977. Ashworth went on to complete a J.D. at Delaware Law School of Widener University in 1980.

Prior to joining the judiciary, he was a founding partner at Wagman, Ashworth, Kreider & Wright. Ashworth had worked as a civil trial attorney for almost twenty years. In addition, he was an instructor at The People’s Law School.

Ashworth has held memberships with the Lancaster County Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Association of Drug Court Professionals, and the Pennsylvania Conference of State Trial Judges. He was a past president of the Rotary Club of Lancaster.

Ashworth holds a third-degree black belt in Tang Soo Do karate and enjoys teaching sailing as a United States Coast Guard licensed OUPV captain. Some of his other hobbies include competing in triathlons, hiking, camping, and sailing with his family.

Ashworth was born in Hartford, Connecticut and graduated from Conestoga High School in Chester County. He and his wife, Kathleen, have three children.

He is registered as a Republican.
