The Hon. David J. Cowan is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 2014 by former Governor Jerry Brown. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Diana M. Wheatley (Ret.).
He is a registered Democrat.
Judge Cowan received his B.A. from Columbia University. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1988.
After graduating from law school, Cowan became an associate at the law firms of Rogers and Wells from 1988 to 1992, and Leland, Parachini, Flinn, Steinberg, Matzger, and Melnick from 1992 to 1994. He became a sole practitioner in 1994, during which time he worked as of counsel at Hong and Chang from 2001 to 2002. His areas of practice included real estate, business, tax, and insurance litigation.
Then, in 2005, Cowan became a court commissioner for the Los Angeles County Superior Court. While a court commissioner, Cowan presided over the Santa Monica Family Law Court. He was reassigned to the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in 2013 to preside over probate cases. He was serving in that capacity at the time of his appointment to the bench in 2014.
