The Hon. David E. Goldstein is a judge for the Superior Court of Contra Costa County in California. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jerry Brown on November 17, 2015, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. David B. Flinn.
Goldstein earned his B.A. in political science from the University of California, Davis in 1991. He then received his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law in 1994.
After graduating from law school, Goldstein became a law clerk for the Office of the Public Defender of Contra Costa County in 1994. The following year, he was hired as a deputy public defender, a position he held until his appointment to the bench. During his twenty-year tenure there, he spent several years handling felony and juvenile delinquency cases. He served as a court-appointed counsel to children and indigent parents in juvenile dependency court, and he was eventually tasked with supervising its Misdemeanor Unit.
In court, he is known to frequently hold pre-trial conferences and likes to use his negotiation skills to resolve cases in a manner that is fair to both parties.
Goldstein is a fan of baseball and has played fantasy baseball for over 35 years. His favorite MLB team is the San Francisco Giants.
He was raised in San Carlos, California. Before pursuing the law, he considered starting an academic career like his parents or becoming a journalist. His favorite subject at school was politics.
He is married to a wife with whom he shares two children.
He is a Democrat.
